Aromatherapy can be part of an integrative treatment plan to help reduce side effects from cancer treatment, such as anxiety, nausea, and insomnia.

Peppermint oil can be helpful when strong odors trigger nausea. Lavender oil may help promote sleep and decrease anxiety. Custom blends can be carried in individual inhaler tubes and used as needed.

Several studies have shown benefit in reducing anxiety, pain, insomnia, and nausea using essential oils in inhalations and with massage. It is important to note that essential oils have not been shown in human studies to prevent or treat cancer. The use of essential oils internally during treatment is not advised, as there is potential for interaction with medications. Use caution applying oils to the skin without first diluting them in creams or lotions.
