The Cancer Insider

Leah’s dream job as a naturopathic physician was to work at an integrative cancer center. She never thought she would also become a patient. She’s the #cancerinsider of The Cancer Pod, offering her insight on the podcast from the perspective of patient and doctor.

Dr. Sherman holds a BFA in Medical Illustration from Virginia Commonwealth University. She has extensive experience working in New York City and Richmond, Virginia as a graphic designer, and pursued a career in naturopathic medicine after seeing the benefits of natural medicine on overall health firsthand. In 2007, she graduated from the National College of Natural Medicine (now the National University of Natural Medicine), then completed two years of a naturopathic family medicine residency at the clinics affiliated with the college. She was accepted to a two-year naturopathic oncology residency at the Goshen Center for Cancer Care in Goshen, Indiana. She then went on to work as a naturopathic doctor at Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Arizona (now City of Hope) and at the Goshen Center for Cancer Care.

In 2018, Dr. Sherman completed IFM Certified Practitioner training through The Institute for Functional Medicine. She is a certified yoga teacher registered with Yoga Alliance, and has received additional yoga teacher training through yoga4cancer and Love Your Brain. She is licensed as a naturopathic doctor in the state of Wisconsin, although she currently is not seeing patients.

Dr. Sherman was diagnosed with stage II breast cancer in 2014, and underwent treatment with chemotherapy, surgery, and hormone therapy. She not only has seen how integrative medicine has helped with her own patients, but also personally experienced the benefits of naturopathic and integrative oncology. She often shares her unique perspective as a #cancerinsider on The Cancer Pod podcast.

When she's not nerding out researching an upcoming episode, Dr. Sherman can be found cooking gluten-free meals, fermenting foods, hanging out with her dogs (a cattle dog, a chow/shepherd mix, and a Pembroke Welsh Corgi), gardening, and starting craft projects. Dr. Sherman has a background in art and theater and loves creating elaborate Halloween costumes for her and her husband. She also likes traveling to Wisconsin to watch the Packers play or relax at the family cabin.
